Legendary Baseball Coach Assumes New Role
Veteran Coach to Transition into Full-Time Role as Assistant Athletic Director
Sumter, SC — After more than a decade of leadership on the diamond, Tim Medlin is stepping down as the head baseball coach at the University of South Carolina Sumter. While his departure from the dugout marks the end of a remarkable coaching era, Medlin will continue to serve the USC Sumter community in a new capacity—as the full-time Assistant Athletic Director.
Coach Medlin's coaching journey began in 1984 at Anderson Junior College, where he served as pitching coach. He later spent 17 years as head coach at Newberry College, leading the Indians to multiple championships, including the NAIA District 6 title and the South Atlantic Conference Tournament crown. His contributions were honored with induction into the Newberry College Hall of Fame in 2013.
Medlin also brought his leadership to the summer collegiate level as manager of the Lexington County Blowfish, further showcasing his ability to develop talent across all levels of the game.
After a brief stint away from coaching while working as a national sales representative for BSN Sports, Medlin returned to the field at USC Sumter. Under his guidance, the Fire Ants reached new heights, including their first NJCAA World Series appearance and multiple Region 10 championships.
Commenting on Medlin's impact at USC Sumter, Dr. Eric Reisenauer, Interim Campus Dean, said, "USC Sumter and the Fire Ants Baseball program owe an immeasurable debt to Coach Medlin. His knowledge, skills, dedication, and professionalism have shaped a superb program of which we are all extremely proud. USC Sumter wishes him the very best in his future endeavors, and he will forever be a Fire Ant."
"Coach Medlin has been the heart of our baseball program and a cornerstone of our athletic department," said USC Sumter Athletic Director, Dr. Adrienne Cataldo. "We are thrilled that he will continue to shape the future of USC Sumter Athletics as the full time Assistant Athletic Director." Coach Medlin previously served as the assistant athletic director, as well as the head baseball coach.
Beyond the wins and accolades, Medlin's legacy is defined by mentorship. Over four decades, he has impacted thousands of student-athletes, instilling values of discipline, service, and leadership. His players have contributed thousands of hours to community service, and many have gone on to successful careers in coaching and beyond.
As he transitions into his new full-time role, Coach Medlin leaves behind a baseball program built on excellence and a legacy that will continue to inspire. His leadership, both on and off the field, has left an indelible mark on USC Sumter and the broader baseball community.
